Peshkopi Landfill

This is one of the frustrating aspects of the city. They dump their garbage in the river. What you see is an area that was a wide river bed with rocks defining the flood zones. The city and local villages dump their garbage along the edges of what they think are the flood levels. It is then covered with dirt. It is called, the landfill. Well, every so many years (not more then 3) a large spring run off occurs and wipes out the "landfill" and moves all the crap down river. The good news is that the Dutch have build and opened a real land fill (October) so that the river won't be the recipient of all these gifts any more. This is the view from the SNV office. In early October, when the garbage got to be greater than the soil available to bury it--it was burnt! It burned for 3 days. The city with its only fire truck tried to put it out but the contractor for the city kept lighting the fires to reduce the volume. We hope in years to come, with the new landfill, that this river (which feeds into the Drin) will be cleaned. Interests for tourism are a driving force in the area, which might even make this a reality!? Hard to imagine right now |
