Tirana has become a colorful city. The current mayor realizing that he cannot repair all the decaying buildings decided to paint them instead. (Huh? "a pig with lipstick?") |
| The painting, according those that have lived there for awhile, has made a marked difference in the city. In addition the mayor is destroying all the illegal buildings which number in the thousands and inhibit the ability to expand the roads. With these illegal building out of the way roads are being widened and paved. Currently it takes about 30-45 minutes to get from the outskirts of Tirana into the center. A distance of about 5 km. | ![]() |

While some housing is getting painted and there are hundreds of new high rise apartments being built all over the city, right in the middle of it all are shacks like this. Speaking of new housing, most, according to the locals, are being built with illegal mafia money. Apparently there is so much of it that one needs to find ways to get rid of it. The good news is that prices of apartments are going down! |
| In the center of town is Skenderbeg Square. He is the national hero who fought the Turks in the 1400's. Statues or pictures of him are everywhere. Even in Kosovo, we saw him in every school and we even had a picture of him in our flat! | ![]() |
