Ismail, Ukraine
One weekend last fall we took a short, over-night trip to a town near the Danube Delta called Ismail (phonetic spelling). We never got to the delta as that would have been a much longer trip plus the boats down the delta had already stopped running for the season. If you were a hard-core bird-watcher, which the delta is famous for, you probably could find someone to take you out there but our time was short. On the other side of the Danube is Romania.

On the way there (4 hour bus ride) you go through many small towns. The houses are pretty much the same with a side courtyard for garden and grape arbor. You could see local creativity on the sides of houses with their various designs. This one was built in 1976.

There were also a number of villages and small settlements. Can you tell you are near a river delta?

Ismail is a nice size city/town, about 50,000 people. We felt at home. This was a quite side street and similar to Odesa, there are big tall trees.

On to the market...like every

town we visit... it seems!

The indoor part of the market was strikingly clean...

and the people were really friendly!

We were impressed with the woman on the left's collection of weights. The woman above was putting her weights to use. Look at the size of those cabbages!
