Belgorod-Dnestrovsky

Last weekend (10/25/03) we took our first trip out of Odesa to a town called Belgorod-Dnestrovsky which is an hour and a half south. There is an old fortress there and we spent the day exploring it.
The fortress is on a large body of water, like a lake, but is really the Dnister River before it empties itself into the Black Sea. Very close to the Moldova boarder.
It looks difficult, but there is an easy way around to this overpass. Doug, Guido and Jim are standing on top.

Doug, a fellow Freedom House volunteer was visiting us from Kyiv. He is an attorney working on a land reform project.

Fuji with Juul and  Guido (both from Amsterdam and volunteers with Doctors Without Boarders) and Doug (like us, another Oregonian working with Freedom House. Well, true confessions: he is from California. We like him anyway!)

A very "up-scale" but native lunch for a bunch of volunteers in a foreign land. Yes, that is caviar and Moldova champagne!
