Face
to Face and
the Children’s Center educate, advocate and protect human
rights
so that people may live safely, participate in decision making and
realize their full potential as responsible citizens of Ukraine.
Established in 2002 as a City of Odessa Non-governmental Organization, Face to Face, has been a catalyst for local democracy in our city and within our schools. In 2003 Face to Face created the Children’s Center as an additional legal entity to specifically promote children’s rights and develop programs to improve the lives of Odessean children and youth regardless of their socio-economic status. Our organizations are intricately linked in mission and share resources to capitalize on the strengths of both to achieve our missions.
Local Democracy – Face to Face
Assisted in creating 17 self-organizing bodies/organizations to advocate for citizens rights in the areas of housing, pensioners rights, access to social services, and people’s involvement in local decision making, such as open meeting laws.
Provided over 30 seminars for citizens, community and business leaders and government officials from Odessa and other cities in Ukraine on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and how to organize self-organizing organizations.
Working in partnership with the City of Odessa supporting democratic changes in its administrative systems, developed the City Statute, and providing technical and educational assistance and support to local self-organizing organizations.
Children’s Rights – Children’s Center
Facilitated roundtable discussions among children and youth in 75 Odessa schools on children’s rights, negative youth behavior and risk factors influencing behavior. We are using this information to educate public officials and applying this knowledge to current programs.
Provided training's for Odessa schools on children’s rights, per the UN Conventions. We also trained youth trainers, who conduct peer training's on children’s rights.
Local Democracy – Children’s Center
Based on information gathered from roundtables established self-organizing bodies in some schools to create democratic systems for youth to influence policies and create programs targeted toward changing negative youth behaviors.
Awarded a social contract from the city of Odessa in 2003 to implement self-organizing organizations throughout the Odessa school system to increase the social-political activity of youth and decrease negative youth behavior.
Recruit, train and support youth leaders in organizing and managing self-organizing organizations (student associations, student governments).
Train school administrations and teachers about student self-organizing organizations and the role they can play in civil society.
Organizational Capacity Building – Children’s Center
Awarded a professional consultation opportunity from Freedom House for two American Volunteers for International Development (AVID) to assist in assessment, strategic planning, program development, training and leadership development.
Educational Initiatives – Children’s Center
Provided Leadership Development and Project Management Class for youth leaders by American Professors of Leadership, sponsored by Freedom House.
Providing internships for university students.
Charitable Program – Children’s Center
Conduct small and major donor campaigns for children with special needs, such as: medical treatment and clothing.
Research – Children’s Center
Sponsored and directed the Odessa study on the Negative Phenomenon in Youth; and
The Study on the Effects of Self-Organizing Bodies for Youth in Odessa schools, both in partnership with the Institute of Social Research.
Volunteer Camps – Children’s Center
Provided work camp experiences for local and international youth during the summer of 2003. Renovated a house for an orphanage while providing leadership and human relations training for youth from 8 countries.
Plain language brochures and pamphlets – Face to Face
Prepared and distributed over 6,000 brochures and pamphlets: “Children’s Rights,” “Reform of administrative and territorial conformation of cities with zone division,” “Creation of conditions for development of local democracy (City Charter process and creating self-organizing bodies/organizations.”
